Sweet Summer Dreams

Get the best nights sleep on a hot summers night.

A hot sleeping environment can affect the quality of your sleep. There are many ways to moderate your body temperature from the design of your bedroom to managing your bed time routine to choosing the right type of bedding.

Ideally you want to keep your bedroom temperature below 20 degrees celcius to avoid restlessness. Fans are an effective way of circulating the air in your bedroom at night to ensure the room doesn’t get too stuffy.

A calming bed time routine is essential. Try a warm bath, a soothing cup of herbal tea or a few pages of a good book to wind down at bed time.

Lastly invest in a lightweight duvet inner and quality cotton bedlinen. Higher thread count cottons are very luxurious but can be warmer in summer due to the dense weave of the fabric. A 800 thread count cotton sheet contains 800 threads of cotton per square centimetre as opposed to a 250 thread count which contains 250. The lower thread count doesn’t mean inferior quality rather a cooler, crisper feel. Choose between our Linen House 250 or Simon Baker 200 thread count cotton percale basics. These ranges include fitted and flat sheets, duvet covers & pillowcases.

Simon Bakers Natural Cotton duvet inner is a 100% cotton duvet, with a tog rating of 4. This ultra-thin lightweight duvet is ideal for hot summer nights.

If duvets are not your thing, a flat sheet and lightweight cotton quilt or blanket is a great alternative. Linen House’s Chantel embroidered quilts or our Cotton Chevron blankets are incredibly versatile as can be both practical in summer, add a layer of warmth in winter and decorative the rest of the year!

Pillow Talk

Finding the perfect pillow can be a challenge!

Your pillow should support your head & neck as though you are standing upright with the correct posture. Your sleeping position will dictate whether to go for a “firm” or “soft” option. If you sleep on your side, you may want a fairly firm pillow to give your head and neck extra support. If you sleep on your back, try a medium-firm pillow to cradle your head with more ‘give.’ And if you sleep on your stomach, choose a soft pillow to lessen the strain on your neck.

Ideally pillows should be replaced every 2 years, depending on use. Some pillows will wear faster than others.

Synthetic fibre pillows tend to flatten or lose their shape faster than a good quality down or foam pillow. This will also apply to a pillow with a high hard feather content as opposed to a higher down content. A higher down content pillow will retain its loft better as air gets trapped between the soft down clusters. Memory foam or latex foam pillows are very durable. Ideal for back or side sleepers, gentle contouring memory or latex foam will provide healthy spine alignment. These will also provide the best possible protection against bacteria & dust mites.

To ensure you get the maximum life out of your pillow, invest in a pillow protector.

Investing in Down

Investing in Down

We always tell clients shopping for a down duvet to rub the duvet between their fingers. This will give you a good idea of the feather content, if very crunchy the duvet has a high feather content as opposed to down and will be heavier. It’s all about what’s inside.

The filling ratio is important, an entry level down duvet will have a low down ratio of around 20%, a higher down content between 60% and 90% will give you the ultimate in softness and weight. The down content will dictate the price but remember you are ultimately investing in your sleep! The lighter and softer the duvet the better it regulates to your body temperature.

Down vs Feather

Down is the soft cluster that covers the breast part of the bird. Feathers are the hard quills so heavier and crunchier due to the stalky part. Down has a longer lifespan so is more durable. Goose down is a better quality down due to geese being bigger than ducks. The bigger down clusters give goose down a higher filling power. Hungarian goose down provides unparalleled insulation and lightweight luxury, that is why it is considered the best down filling available. This is attributed to the specialized breeding heritage of Hungarian geese and the country’s extremely harsh and long winters which enhance the thermal properties of Hungarian goose down.

What do we mean by “filling power”?

Filling power relates to “warmth without weight”. The higher the filling power the less filling you need in a finished product to reach the benchmark of a quality down or feather duvet or pillow.
